All participants must be between the ages of 12 & 25

This is a “performance based” blues music program. All participants must be able to play an instrument with enough ability to play in a band and have an interest in learning and/or further developing their skill-set as a blues musician. Rudimentary through to advanced players are welcome. Participants will be matched and grouped into bands with similar skill level and age.

Participants will be required to bring their own instruments. There will be some backline provided (PA, Drum-kit, guitar & bass amps.) Participants will be assigned to either session 1 (11am to 1pm), or session 2 (12pm to 2pm). This enables us to maximise the space and quality mentor time. Rehearsals will be guided by the team of Youth In Blues mentors. Bands will learn and rehearse 2 to 3 songs within the blues idiom while applying and developing blues musicianship concepts.

All Youth In Blues participants will attend the 12:15pm masterclass where they will learn from the experiences of professional blues musicians in a group setting.

To conclude the program all bands will perform the songs they have worked on in rehearsals in a one hour showcase at Star Theatre’s ‘Back 2 Back’ Festival. The showcase will be presented in a theatre setting with full lighting and production.

Participants are encouraged to invite family and friends to attend this show. Tickets will be available to purchase for the final showcase soon.

ARBA Youth in Blues Program 2021 Closing concert

A brilliant afternoon and a full-house at the ARBA Youth in Blues end of program concert held at Star Theatres on Sunday 31st October!
Congratulations to all the participants for their efforts and to program mentors Erica Graf, Evan Whetter, Mario Marino and Steve Wilson for a job well done!
A big thanks to all at Star Theatres, to the ARBA volunteers and to everyone who attended the various fundraisers that allow us to undertake this annual program (we receive no government funding).
Finally a massive shout out to the 360 members of the Adelaide Roots and Blues Association. Without you, none of our programs and initiatives would be possible.
The future of blues in SA is in good hands!

ARBA Youth in Blues Mission Statement

The mission of the ARBA Youth in Blues program is to educate, nurture and foster the next generation of South Australian blues musicians. Participants will be educated and mentored by experienced professional musicians.

They will learn about the history of the blues, blues musical forms, song writing, stagecraft and marketing. They will get the opportunity to connect, rehearse and perform with other young musicians. There will also be public performance opportunities.

The program will also aim to introduce the participants and their families to the wider blues community and foster connections that will continue well past the formal program duration.

The ARBA Youth in Blues Program is an important contributor to the ongoing sustainability and longevity of the blues scene in South Australia.

Programs are run annually with the next program due in the later part of 2022.
